Korea' s Ice Gallery {아이스 갤러리}

Summer in Korea as it is known is Hot. Humid ,Stuffy and tiring, but it can also be interesting and fun when you find the right thing to do to cool off the heat.  Well apart from the normal rafting,bungee jumping, zip lining, kayaking and all the rest. We found one thing that is very much on the cheap side, is fun and does not take a long bus ride to get to ,.,..

The Seoul Ice gallery .  It takes about 15 minutes to tour. At the entrance you get heavy winter jackets as the place is maintained under very low temperatures. it feels like winter in there.

The gallery have curved ice into household items and more stuff. On the first floor you get to do the carving by yourself. Mostly interesting to the children.
On the basement that is where you take the small trip to the cold Greenland.

A fridge with everything you would wish for, veggies, drinks food  and a vodka!!

Important household tool.

This was during the London Olympic. am sure they will change that come next summer to something new!!
An Ice bar...Way to go!!!!

Super Junior and  the Big Bang could not be forgotten..
It is K-POP TIME!!!

There was so much going on there.  Apart  from what I have posted above there are so many sculptures  that portray Korean beauty like the Sungremun, Ojakgyo, Bukchon Hanok Village, Dabotap and more and it is so much fun to freeze during summer. It is refreshing and makes one forget for a 15 minutes about the heat and the humidity.

It is a place worth trying during summer in Korea for only 7KRW

You can read more from their website http://www.icegallery.co.kr/html/index.php

K-Food Supporter {구절판 만들기}

After joining a this great group called the Korean Food supporters, {K-Food supporters}, they took us on a trip to Jeonju to get to experience Korean culture through touring and  also making Korean traditional food. We learnt how to make 구철판 {GUJEOLPAN}, a Korean dish that consists of nine dishes assorted on a plate and consists of nine different sections.The name is composed of three hanja words: gu (구, "nine" ), jeol (절, "section"), andpan (판, "plate") in Korean.
Foods are separated by color and ingredients

we had everything prepared for us. All we had to do was chop, slice, fry and cook everything and make sure we emerge as a winner from the nine groups that we present.
It was not that easy as it sounds.
Each group had to make sure that their food looked as presentable as can be.Well sliced and arranged.

Things we needed

Purple cabbage, carrot. mushroom, purple cabbage, cucumber, and bean
sprouts

Meat

Eggs

Garlic

The Korean Ajuma had to teach us how to make sure everything looked great. We had to observer and follow her illustration.

This was our group.
WE looked s ready to start cooking

HOW TO MAKE IT

  • Mushroom, cucumber,carrot and the meat need to be all sliced into thin straight and equal parts
  • as for the egg you have to  separate the yolk from the Albumen
  • fry the egg separately with no oil
  • Fry all of them in the same way without cooking oil {rgw mushroom, cucumber, carrot}
  • But as for the meat and the mushroom and the purple cabbage make sure you
  • add oil and salt..
  • Do not let them cook too much
  • One more thing is you need to make  make small  and very thin Korean style pancakes
  • Our group did a wonderful job but we were too slow and happened not to keep time..

but at the end of it all we came up with something good ad delicious.

  • CHECK IT OUT!!

Doesn't it just look delicious.

So for the eating process you pick up your favorite and place it in the Korean pancake after dipping it in the sauce and then wrap it as shown below and you are good to go .

Nyam  Nyam nyam all the way

It is so easy to make one can actually do it at home.

I hope you try making it ad experience the Korean culture!!!

Peace and love,
Phyllis

Coming of Age Day {성년의 날}

The coming of age Day is a day which is celebrated in most countries. A celebration that marks the transition from childhood to adulthood. It is a very important age for those young people who are turning 20 years. On this day they get gifts and and get welcomed into the society as adults.
I had got a call in the morning from the office requesting me to join these celebrations.
I knew totally nothing about it so when I got this call I was taken aback and had no idea what I was supposed to wear or even how they are conducted. Celebrations to becoming a woman in Africa and everywhere else in the world are totally different. So when I told them I am not sure what that meant they promised to explain to me what exactly was going to happen and what was expected of me.
We did a lot of preparing since I am not used to the bending and all that bowing.
I had to be taught from the start on how to give respect to the elders and how and where to place my hands, how to maintain my facila expression and even how to drink tea from the small cups that we were supposed to use during the celebration. It was totally traditional and I almost gave up!!!
But I ad to give it a try. I wanted so badly to experience the Korean culture as I was also so new here.

We wore 한복 (Korean traditional dress} I had a hard time trying to make sure it fit my bust since the ones we had we kind of designed for smaller busts. It had to fit. I was determined.
It was an awesome day for me!!

I turned 20 in style!!

This bowing may seem easy but I swear you have to bow to a certain angle and doing that repeatedly made my back ache. ㅠㅠ

It was time to fasten my hair  with a "binyeo," an ornamental hairpin
this was a problem, with my sister dreadlocks. The pin could not stick in well but we took care of that well enough.

And then i had to  put on a "jjokduri," a ceremonial cap.

This was the whole crew. Four {two Koreans and two foreigners} of us turned twenty and we had Korea parents who helped us dress up and make up and one who taught us how to bow.

We all would go through the transition....<3

It was time to be thankful for the opportunity given to us to participate in the celebration.

The two girls with black suits were me and the other foreigner's translators.

This was one day I will always be glad and thankful for in Korea.....Initiation

you can watch the link below to get to see what happened though I am not in the video so much.
